Types of Braces

Dental braces are familiar concepts to most people. There are types of braces called invisalign braces, which effectively are dental braces that are not immediately visible. This type of brace is a common dental treatment for misaligned teeth. Invisalign braces are clear plastic aligners that are placed on top of teeth for the duration of the treatment, which is anywhere between six and twelve months. The availability of different types of braces today has made it possible for both children and adults to have successful dental treatments to realign teeth.

Many people consider their teeth to be an important asset, and it is true they can help to give a superb first impression. However, a winning smile is not the only reason for dental treatment. Sometimes, overcrowding in teeth can cause painful complications to develop in the mouth and jaw. In fact, frequent headaches can be the result of overcrowding teeth.

Causes of misaligned and badly spaced teeth

All of us want to have perfectly formed and completely aligned teeth. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. There are different causes for this. These include:

Of course, many of these issues are unavoidable, but with proper dental treatment, for instance, the use of different types of braces, teeth alignment and spacing issues can be easily resolved.

Behind the teeth ligual braces

When it comes to resolving teeth alignment issues, a lot of people use aligners that are set behind the teeth. These are more expensive than their more visible counterparts and the reason for that is their brackets are permanently set at the back of the teeth. They are made this way so as to ensure that the dental brackets fit snugly onto the back of the teeth of the wearer. To be able to achieve this they are made to measure and cannot be mass-produced like other dental braces.

Conventional metal-wired braces

Conventional metal-wired braces are the most common types of braces available and you can see a lot of people wearing them. They are made of stainless metal wires and their purpose is to change the position of misaligned teeth by applying soft pressure, gently moving the teeth into the correct position. These braces can be adjusted to suit the changing position of the teeth and are worn until all the teeth have been correctly realigned. Their main setback is that they have to be worn for a long time before noticeable results are obtained and they are not cosmetically aesthetic. These types of braces are frequently used to help align teeth in small children.

Self ligating braces

Unlike the conventional types of braces, self ligating braces are a better option, as they do not require special ligatures to keep the wires in place. They are often referred to as speed braces because they can provide excellent results within a quicker time period.
